For the launch of the Daily Paper x Eastpak collection, we teamed up with multidisciplinary creative and fashion force Potent K.O., the protagonist of our latest campaign, Fiasco! This visually striking campaign celebrates the energy, individuality, and adaptability of personal style - seamlessly blending the bold functionality of Eastpak with Daily Paper's cultural richness. Through dynamic shots, Fiasco! captures movement, transformation, and a deep sense of self-expressions where bags are more than accessories - they're part of the story.
In this exclusive interview, Potent K.O. opens up about his creative process, personal inspirations, and the role fashion plays in his identity. From Ghanian roots to anime icons and candy-wrapper color palettes, he shares what it means to move the beat of your own drum in an ever-evolving world of style.
You've made a remarkable impact in fashion by blending various eras and trends. In such a fast-paced and constantly evolving industry, how do you maintain your creativity flowing while staying true to your unique style?
It’s funny you ask that because I never paid attention to “trends”. I’ve always been passionate about expressing what I haven’t seen or want to see more of in the world. I think that allows me to show up as my most authentic self while things shift so rapidly. It’s a cliche but I’d like to say I Move to the beat of my own drum.
What or who are the key sources of inspirations that have shaped your approach to fashion, and how do they influence the way you express yourself through your wardrobe?
There’s a plethora of things that serve as a source of inspiration for me but the top 3 would have to be: seeing my Ghanaian parents/relatives step out to parties and even to church in these flamboyant & vibrant Ntoma and Ankara. Second would have to be cartoons/animes like sonic the hedgehog, dragon ball z & Gundam. And third would be iconic figures like Grace Jones, Daddy Lumba & Prince. Honorable mention and I know this sounds wild but candy wrappers have some of the best color combinations so I use that as a source of inspiration too.
Crafting a look is an art form in itself. Can you walk us through your creative process when selecting a look, and how do you perceive the role of accessories, like bags - both as functional and stylish items to complete an outfit?
I see myself as a performance artist with that being said crafting a look is to paint my favorite super hero that doesn’t quite exist yet. But it all starts with the music to set the tone. And then I look for color palettes that reflect my mood. Always remember dress according to mood not weather. Then I’m on to silhouettes, textures and materials that allow me to find the balance between masculine and feminine energy. And as far as accessories, the Bag can be the defining factor on if the outfit is complete enough to walk out the house with! When you find the perfect harmony between functionality and style you’ve sealed the deal!
The Eastpak x Daily Paper collaboration blends Eastpak's iconic designs with Daily Paper's rich cultural heritage. How does your cultural background shape the way you approach and express yourself through fashion?
My heritage is the foundation of how I approach expressing myself. I come from a Ghanaian background and we are very big on symbolism. We use Adinkra symbols which I like to call “Ghanaian Hieroglyphics” in clothing, fabrics and even buildings — And these symbols serve as a vehicle to communicate/preserve principles & traditions. With that being said I’m very intentional about how I show up visually because it’s the first form of non verbal communication when I walk into a space.
The Fiasco! campaign captures the protagonist navigating a whirlwind of fashion and transformation. How do you relate to this character who experiments with different looks while maintaining a strong sense of individuality throughout constant change?
I relate to this character in a sense that I’m constantly exploring how to push boundaries while keeping my intentions pure and true to who I am at the core. There’s no right or wrong way to do it I’m just building the plane as I fly it.
