“I do love creativity and crazy ideas, but the realization has to be impeccable. I can count on Eastpak for that.”
- Walter Van Beirendonck.
A BOLD RETURN TO AN ICONIC COLLABORATION WITH EASTPAK
More than twenty years after our first collaboration, we’re opening a new chapter with boundary‑pushing Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck. A key figure of the “Antwerp Six” and former head of fashion at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, he has long shaped the industry with bold, conceptual, and innovative work.
Our partnership began in 2004 with the original Monster backpack, a symbol of fearless creativity and playful design. Ten years later, in 2014, Walter reimagined the concept for Eastpak’s Artist Studio project with Designers Against Aids (DAA), transforming the Monter into a premium collector’s piece. Now, in 2026, he brings that spirit once again with the striking new Walter Pak’r.
THE WALTER PAK’R RETURNS IN THREE BOLD MONOCHROME EDITIONS
Unveiled during Menswear Fall/Winter 2026-2027 Paris Fashion Week, the Walter Pak’r marks the long‑awaited evolution of the original Monster Backpack: a design that quickly became a cult symbol of Walter’s universe. This time, it reemerges in three bold monochrome editions - Orange, Blue, and Military Green - stripped back, sharpened, and reimagined with his unmistakable graphic touch.
The collaboration expands further in September 2026 with a wider collection featuring the Walter Pak’r in Faux Leather, alongside new interpretations including mini bags, backpacks, and tote bags in vibrant red, green, and black colorways.

We had the chance to speak with Walter himself about revisiting this iconic character, the creative energy behind the new collection, and what it means to bring the Monster back to life after two decades.
How did the collaboration with Eastpak evolve from 2004, 2014 and now in March 2026?
It was weird to start again with the Monster Backpack, a design I did for Eastpak back in 2004. But it also felt right, as the design still feels very relevant for today. Very quickly, I felt very comfortable to design the new styles.
What aspect of Eastpak resonate most with your own creative style?
I do love the way that Eastpak is working on the quality of the materials and products. I do love creativity and crazy ideas, but the realization always has to be impeccable, and I can count on Eastpak for that.
What does the “monster” represent in your creative universe, and why did it feel like the right character to bring into this collaboration?
I love to add emotion and life to ‘objects’, I also love toys, dolls and puppets. By adding a face or facial features, an object is changing completely and is coming alive. I am using monsters and teeth forever in my collections
The Padded Pak’r is one of Eastpak’s most iconic silhouettes. How did you bring your surreal “monster” world to this classic silhouette?
I started from the Eastpak Padded Pak’r and added it the monster’s features which made it come alive.
How would you personally style the Walter Pak'r?
Let them growl and snarl!!
