What is the best size for a travel backpack?

The best size backpack is one you can carry for your entire trip. It might sound over simplistic, but what you can carry isn’t just about weight.

Sure, you’ll need the right literage. You’ll often see hikers and festival goers carrying around 50 litres. A weekend away might only need 30 litres of packing space.

However, a backpack’s shape, material, and weight distribution features will impact what you find to be a comfortable carrying weight.

Choosing the Perfect Backpack Size

If you need volume, deep rectangular backpack styles will offer more space than triangular packs. They’re bulkier and sometimes have additional features like padded shoulder straps for comfort, or a chest or hip strap to distribute and stabilise the extra weight they let you carry.

But if your travel plans require you to be ultra mobile, access your items quickly or squeeze onto crowded public transport, a triangular-shaped pack is more streamlined. It sits closer to the body and it’s easier to access the contents on the go.

  • Padded Pak'r measures H 40 x W 30 x D 18 cm and holds 24 litres
  • Getter Pro measures H 47.5 x W 32 x D 15 cm and holds 23 litres

Both rectangular and triangle packs can come with features like compression straps and loops to attach extra items if you want to increase the volume of your pack.

Roll top backpacks are also an expandable option for an adjustable amount of space. They’re a simpler design and so they’re usually a little lighter, but this does mean they don’t usually have additional compartments or the extra weight distribution features of a classic backpack.

What size backpack fits under airplane seats?

If you're a frequent flyer, you’ll want to make sure your backpack fits within the underseat bag size requirements. Each airline has its own rules, but the strictest airlines tend to limit bags to 40 x 20 x 25 cm.

How To Measure Backpack Size

You might want to measure a backpack you currently have against a new option or find out if it’s the correct size for a flight. To do this:

  1. Empty the backpack completely
  2. Measure the height by placing the backpack upright and measuring from the bottom to the top of the bag
  3. Measure the width of the backpack at its widest point from side to side
  4. Measure the depth, from the front to the back of the backpack
  5. Calculate the volume by multiplying height × width × depth. This will give you the volume in cubic centimetres. Then divide by 1000 to convert to litres

Keep in mind that this calculation gives you an approximate volume and may not take into account external pockets and other features.

You can find all this information in each product description on our Eastpak website. For example, our iconic Padded Pak'r measures H 40 cm x W 30 x D 18 cm (height, width and depth). The volume is 24 L (litres).

Backpack volume guide

Talking in litres can sometimes feel a little abstract, so it’s good to have a reference point for what a backpack of a certain volume can actually hold in terms of real items you’re likely to take.

For example:

  • 20-30 litre backpack can hold a few t-shirts, an extra pair of bottoms and a small laptop. The 30-litre option will allow for a jacket and a few more accessories.
  • 40-50 litre backpack can hold bulkier outdoor wear and extra shoes or boots.
  • 60-70 litre backpack can hold a variety of camping equipment and supplies, and a range of clothing for cold and wet weather.
